Is a Giant Schnauzer the Right Dog for You?

If you've found yourself researching Giant Schnauzers, chances are you've already fallen in love with their striking appearance, intelligence, and loyal personality. But before bringing one home, it's important to understand what life with a Giant Schnauzer is really like.
At Stone Giant Schnauzers, we believe the best homes are educated homes. Our goal is to help every family make the right decision—even if that means a Giant Schnauzer isn't the perfect fit. Unlike many more common breeds, Giant Schnauzers remain relatively rare in Alberta, making them a unique choice for families looking for an intelligent, loyal, and versatile companion. We are passionate about preserving the breed through responsible breeding practices, health testing, and careful placement of every puppy.
A Loyal Companion
Giant Schnauzers are known for forming incredibly strong bonds with their families. They are affectionate, devoted, and happiest when they are included in everyday life. They don't enjoy being left alone for long periods and thrive when they have a purpose and plenty of interaction with their people.
Highly Intelligent
I have trained many breeds before and this breed is exceptionally intelligent and learns quickly. They excel with consistent training and positive reinforcement, but they also have an independent side. Without leadership and structure, they can become stubborn and develop unwanted habits. It is key to put in hard work and structure as a puppy so they thrive as an adult - like any dog truly!
Early socialization and ongoing training are essential for raising a confident, well-mannered Giant Schnauzer.
An Active Breed
Giant Schnauzers were bred to work. They enjoy daily walks, hikes, play sessions, obedience training, scent work, and other activities that challenge both their minds and bodies.
A bored Giant Schnauzer will often find their own entertainment—which usually isn't something their owner appreciates! I will say from my experience with the breed, I have not found them overly mentally excited to the point where I cannot correct it or control it like I have with other breeds in the past. With my Giants I have not dealt with any destructive behaviors either. I am diligent with mental stimulation stimulation and physical activities to make this not a bah habit.
Protective by Nature
One of the Giant Schnauzer's most admired qualities is their natural protective instinct. They are loyal guardians who are naturally watchful of their family and home.
Proper socialization from an early age is essential to help them grow into confident, stable adults. In my own breeding program, temperament is one of my highest priorities. My Giant Schnauzers are confident, friendly, and welcoming to guests that I invite into our home. One of the qualities I admire most is how in tune they are with me—they pay close attention to my body language and often take their cues from how I respond to a situation. If I'm relaxed and welcoming, they are too. If something seems unusual or makes me uncomfortable, they're naturally alert and attentive. It's one of the many reasons I love this incredible breed.
Grooming Requirements
Although Giant Schnauzers shed very little, they are not maintenance-free.
Regular brushing helps prevent mats, and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks keeps their coat healthy and looking its best. I can advise which groom is best for the soft or wiry coat to make grooming easier! Routine nail trims, ear cleaning, and dental care are also important parts of keeping your Giant healthy.
